In the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when so little was known about how it was spread, it took courage for physicians to be willing to treat patients afflicted with the disease. It took a major shift in knowledge and perception before doctors and nurses would be confident in providing the compassion and care their patients needed.
That is why Tulsa CARES, a nonprofit organization that provides social services to people affected by HIV and AIDS, will be honoring Tulsa doctors and specialists who were among the first in the city to treat patients with HIV and AIDS. The evening’s theme is “Shift: Perception, Awareness, Compassion” and will include an interactive gallery exhibit, cocktails, dinner, dancing, and a live auction.
The physicians who will be recognized at the gala are:
Madhuri Lad, OSU Physicians; Danny Thomason, Utica Park Clinic; Frances Haas, Saint Francis Health System; Heather Bell, Executive/Medical Director, HOPE; Peter Okwuasaba, Saint Francis Health System; Kimberly Martin, OU Physicians; Johnny Stephens, OSU Center for Health Sciences; Stacy Chronister, OSU Medical Center; Christina Connel, OSU Center for Health Sciences; William Lewis, Saint Francis Health System; Damon Baker, OSU Center for Health Sciences and medical director for the Ryan White Program; Mark Rowland, retired from Saint Francis Health System; Jorge Mera, Cherokee Nation Health Service; David Scheck, Hillcrest Medical Center; and Dr. James Hutton, retired from the St. John Health System.
