"Too wonderful for words," was how many of those attending the recent Red Ribbon Gala at the PAC's Westby Pavilion described the evening that benefited Tulsa C.A.R.E.S.
It certainly had it all -- a great setting, outstanding cuisine, generous donors and a sizzling disco in the PAC's adjoining black-box theater.
Guests dined at beautifully appointed tables set up in the pavilion that features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Williams Center Green. Then, they moved next door to the disco, which was, as Tulsa C.A.R.E.S. president Joel Norvell said, "New York City's Studio 54 and more."
Norvell and his wife, Tracey, who were honorary co-chairmen of the gala, joined the throng on the dance floor. Many were wearing glowing, bendable necklaces and tooting brightly colored whistles amidst the special effects of fog, bubbles and flashing lights reflected in the mirrored disco balls overhead.
DJ David Turner provided the music and some standouts on the dance floor included Debbie and Roger Wheeler; Liz and Robert Austin; and board members Bob Stewart, there with Laura Gonsavles; and Karen Wicker, there with her husband, Dr. David Patterson.
Other board members on hand included gala chairman Shannon Hall and his wife, Cindy Hulsey; Mike Mills; Greg Kach and his wife, Connie; Steve Wright; Becky Billings and her husband, Robert; Irene Bray; and Charles Faudree, there with his sister, Francie.
Also attending were Linda Jenkins, Robert Powers, Bob Hulsey, Merrily Sanzalone and Ray Hall, Phil Long, Nancy Renberg, Janice Nicklas, Mitchell Savage and Michael Smith, Pat Gordon and Duane MenNe, Murray and Dr. Francis Haas, Daniel Tideman and Karin Cantrell.
During a short program, Tulsa C.A.R.E.S. executive director Sharon Thoele thanked all those attending and especially recognized the United Way for its continued support of this organization that provides effective, compassionate care to those with HIV/AIDS.
Special thanks went to Joel Norvell, a four-year board member and president for two years, and retiring board members Wicker and Wright.
Joel introduced incoming president Hall, president-elect Stewart and next year's Red Ribbon Gala chairman Faudree, as well as committee members Talmadge Powell and Tideman.
Major sponsors include Bryan Close, Hulsey and Hall, the Schusterman Foundation and Sue and Dr. Tom Stees.
Other sponsors were Agouron Pharmaceutical, Faudree, Lori Frank, Kelly Kirby, Nancy and Joe McDonald, Judy and Jim Miller, Marty Newman, Howard Nix, H.O.P.E. Testing Clinic, Ted Mundt, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Novell, Joel, Tracey and Clay Norvell, Peggy Perigo Sehorn, Mitchell Savage, Smith, Jill and Bob Thomas, Steve Wright and Powell.
